#1 Mermaid?
Palawan is the home (or former home) of multitudes of endangered or near-endangered species of animals and plants. One of them is the Mermaid -- actually in malay, "duyong" means mermaid and in Palawan, the duyong is more like Florida's Manatee than the mythical, half-human beauties. Dugong dugon, or sea cow can be found in the coastal waters of Palwan. Duyong are shy and feed on sea grass. Smaller than their brethen Manatees, the Duyong also differ by their tail which is more fluke-like - resembling the tail of dolphins and whales instead of round like a paddle. Once found all over the Philippines, the duyong is very rare and endangered from human predators, pollution, and habitat destruction.
#2 Mining Town
Roxas probably started out as a mining town. After World War II, Silica from the sand and beaches was mined by the San Miguel Corporation. At the time one of the major products developed from Silica was the glass. The Silica was shipped to Manila to be turned into glass. And this glass was used to bottle their beverages and beer.
